First Nations Canoe Rescued from Burn Pile
25 Aug
A First Nations cedar canoe carved by aboriginal carver Felix Jack in 1940 was nearly set to be burned four years ago. Hand-carved at his home in Canada’s Mayne Island Indian Reserve, Jack’s unique canoes were known for their unique flare and stability.
Luckily, 81-year-old retired mechanic Bob Georgeson recognized the Jack’s work and hauled the canoe out of the burn pile for restoration. He painstakingly performed the work himself, repairing planks and removing years of built-up paint. Now, he hopes to see the canoe preserved in a local museum.
