Nalgene to Phase Out Bottles with BPA

21 Apr

Nalgene, the maker of fluid bottles popular with many outdoor enthusiasts, announced it will phase out production of containers made with Bisphenol A (BPA) in response to consumer safety concerns.

The company’s signature hard, clear, colorful bottles which had become popular in the last decade are made with BPA.

Research has shown that BPA acts like estrogen and, in animal studies, has been shown to have carcinogenic effects. A study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 2004 found that 95 percent of people tested had traces of BPA in their urine.

Recent research, reported on HERE, showed that hot fluids caused BPA to leech from bottles at a higher rate.

“Based on all available scientific evidence, we continue to believe that Nalgene products containing BPA are safe for their intended use,” Steven Silverman, general manager of Nalgene, said in a media release. “However, our customers indicated they preferred BPA-free alternatives and we acted in response to those concerns.”

The company does produce other fluid container lines that do not contain BPA.
