President Gets Wild & Scenic Rivers Bill
27 Mar
Wednesday was “… a day to celebrate,” according to the environmental advocacy group American Rivers.
The group cheered House passage of the Omnibus Public Land Management Act which designates more than 1000 miles of new National Wild and Scenic Rivers. The House of Representatives voted 285 to 140 to pass the package which the Senate had affirmed 66 to 12 in January.
President Obama is expected to sign the bill into law shortly.
The conglomeration of 160 separate bills will designate an additional 2 million acres of wilderness across the country and names 86 new Wild and Scenic Rivers in eight states. The bill drew fire from some Republicans, property-rights groups, and resource development advocates before passage.
