Safe Paddling Tips as the Season Commences

The beginning of May is a good time to talk about canoe safety; As the weather warms and the rivers run, it pays to be safety-smart as we head back onto the water.

Howard Myerson of the Grand Rapids Press offered THIS fine column recently about canoeing safety.  He knows whereof he speaks, having once flipped his boat above a logjam on a Michigan river one March.

Some of Myerson’s tips:  wear a PFD, dress and pack for immersion, read the river, and stay to the inside on blind turns.
