The Lake Monona Water Walk celebrates clean water

1 May

Ojibwe grandmother Josephine Mandamin has walked around each of the Great Lakes, starting with Lake Superior. She says it gave her the chance to get to know the majesty and power of that lake on a personal level. And once you see how pure and clean it is, she says, “You want it to stay like that forever and ever and ever.”

This summer, she and William Waterway Marks, author of the Holy Order of Water and Water Voices from Around the World, are leading the Lake Monona Water Walk in Madison, Wisconsin, to raise awareness about the health of our waters. We hope you’ll join them to walk around Lake Monona and view a special screening of a new moving, Waterlife, June 6-8.

The Lake Monona Water Walk also includes a BIke-a-thon, a community potluck, and the walk itself will have several stops; water and sustainability organizations will offer activities, and Mandamin and Marks will share wisdom, prayers and guidance.

If you want to help plan the event, the next assembly is being held this week, on Wednesday, May 2 at 6 p.m. at the Monona Community Center, 1011 Nichols Road in Madison. In the meantime, here’s a trailer for Waterlife (if the video doesn’t play, you can also watch it HERE).
