Tom Thomson Mystery Re-Examined
10 Apr
Canadian artist Tom Thomson died more than 90 years ago. His empty canoe was found floating upside-down on a lake in Ontario’s Algonquin Park on July 8, 1917. The “Group of Seven” painter’s body surfaced later in the week.
The death, which has long been shrouded in mystery, is now a subject of study on an educational, mystery-solving web site called Great Unsolved Mysteries in Canadian History.
The Toronto Star reports on the mystery and the web site HERE. People have long-wondered if Thomson’s death was an accident, a suicide, or a murder.
The new site – called Death on a Painted Lake: the Tom Thomson Tragedy and found HERE – encourages students to examine the mystery by combing through letters, journal entries, and newspaper accounts.
You can see images of Thomson’s paintings, HERE.
