Water Explorer Making Waves with Kayak Crossing from California to Hawaii
19 Jul
Aptly named explorer Wave Vidmar is making waves in the paddling world and the general media for his upcoming solo journey from California to Hawaii–by kayak. Vidmar will be completely alone, and his journey of more than 3,100 miles will be unsupported.
Coverage in the New York Times and Signal News reports that Vidmar will paddle a custom-built kayak for an estimated 45 to 60 days. When he hits open water, any rescue could cost as much as $35,000 an hour. If the crossing is successful, he will be the second man to navigate an ocean cross to Hawaii. Ed Gillet paddled from Monteray Bay to Maui in 63 days.
