Paddle the NFCT, Hike the AT … in One Year!
6 Nov
We’ve become intrigued by Jason Bivin’s attempt to hike the Appalachian Trail and paddle the Northern Forest Canoe Trail this year. After all, who doesn’t admire a nice, obsessive 2,700+ mile pursuit!
Bivin, who has recorded his progress and observations on THIS blog, walked 1,279.2 miles of the AT between mid-March and early-July — going from Springer Mountain, Georgia to Delaware Water Gap, Pennsylvania — before putting on the waters of the NFCT on July 13 to paddle its 580 miles.
For the paddling segment from Old Forge, New York to Fort Kent, Maine, Bivin paddled solo in a 14-foot Bell Yellowstone. He completed the paddling stage of his tour de force on September 9, then got right back on his feet for the southbound AT journey from Mount Katahdin, Maine back to Delaware Water Gap.
According to his latest post from Vermont on October 31, Bivin had logged 1,709 miles of hiking so far, with 466 remaining before he completes his feat.
Bivin’s blog includes photos from the trail and regular updates on his progress this year.
