Floats Like a Concrete Canoe

Paddling a concrete canoe, at first blush, seems about as wise as flying in a lead zeppelin. THIS story in UCLA’s Daily Bruin, though, will quickly have you believing otherwise.
At the school best known for its 1970s basketball dynasty, members of the UCLA concrete canoe team spend the better part of a school year designing and constructing a canoe made of concrete to not only float but also to meet state watercraft requirements and race against other concrete boats.
UCLA’s concrete canoe “Final Four,” if you will, takes place in April at the American Society of Civil Engineers Southwest Regional Conference where 18 schools will test their boats against one-another.
Here’s hoping the paddles — and PFDs — are made from something a little lighter.
