Canada to Purchase Ely, Minnesota?

Figuring the first day of April was a good day to break the news — or kick-off a new marketing campaign — the Ely, Minnesota Chamber of Commerce announced that Canada intends to purchase the small northern Minnesota town which is a gateway to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area.

The release claims that “the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources has entered into negotiations with the Minnesota DNR and the Governor’s office to arrive at a satisfactory price. Sources close to the deal say that Ely will become Ely, Ontario as early as 2009.”
We think it’s foolish for Minnesota to sell the town.
